Touch : Predictable Storyline and Lack of Research on World Culture
Since weeks ago, every time I turn on any channel on Fox network, I am bombarded by promo clips of 'Touch'. The promo emphasized that this is a 'global premier' and that the creator was 'from the creators of Heroes'.

Oh right, Heroes. That TV Show that went down the drain after season 1.

I didn't give a damn about this TV show, and if you see the condition of our TV, you wouldn't want to watch anything on it. But my sister seemed to be invested in the show, proving that repeated advertisements do wonder, and that Heroes creator Tim Kring does still have a name.

She insisted to watch it on it's 'global premier' on TV, though in the end she couldn't find it for a while and missed the first 5 minutes. I watched it with her while cursing our stupid TV for changing its proportion every so often. At the end of it I said 'fuck it' and then went online to find the episode to watch it properly. And turned out, our TV lied. It was not a global premier, it first aired last week and I could already find the second episode online.

I'm bad at making summaries of anything, but to sum it up, there's this kid (and several other people in this world) who could see the connection of people through numbers. Doesn't make any sense? I told you I'm not good at making summaries, go watch it or read the wikipedia.

My point is. As a tv show, it's more than decent. You know, big stars, big network, big budget ... it's impossible that the show is looking like it's poorly done. As for story line, it's not that interesting. It's kind of predictable since story for each episode will be the main character trying to connect the dots using the numbers that the kid told him as the key. It felt very forced, but I guess I don't really mind that?

But as a person who majored cultural studies, I feel offended by the lack of cultural background research conducted before the writer decided to involve every culture in the world. YOU CAN'T JUST GO BY STEREOTYPES. Seriously, it's driving me crazy!
  • First, they show a character of a young boy from a poor family who lives in the middle east. His family is so poor he agreed to volunteer for a self-bombing terrorist attack. WHUT. As a muslim, I AM OFFENDED. This stereotype is just that WRONG stereotype the Americans have towards muslims and these kind of shows/movies only gratifies that very idea! WHAT THE FUCK.

  • Second, they have a lot of Japanese girls who works at a costume cafe(?). They found a phone that were left by a costumer and started playing with it. They play the video that was saved in it, they recorded a video of themselves, and they bring the phone as they went abroad. THIS IS CRAZY. Do you even have any idea how the Japanese are with lost and found items? IF SOMEONE DROPPED A WALLET ON THE STREET, OTHER PEOPLE WOULDN'T TOUCH IT. Let alone playing with it or take it with them! The only thing make sense is that they will take it to the nearest police office. Or at least the office manager so they could put it in the lost and found section.

  • Third, they show a character of a boy whose father is a mafia. He lives in Russia and he has no friend since everyone is afraid of his father. He bought cheap stupid magic trick equipments to impress everyone at his school so he could have some friends. That obviously didn't work and he went back to the store that sells him those stuff and demanded a refund. O RLY. THIS IS SUCH AN AMERICAN WAY OF THINKING.

  • Fourth, they showed a young Indian guy who went to New York to spread his father's ashes at the baseball stadium (that was super stupid, btw). And this guy, was carrying the ashes of his dad in a Ganesha-shaped, ceramic urn. *shakes head* How is this a way less obvious stereotypical Indian person? WHO THE HELL WOULD BRING THE ASHES OF THEIR FATHER, IN A GANESHA SHAPED CERAMIC URN AROUND THE JFK AIRPORT????

I might be biased since I'm a South East Asian Muslim whose culture is heavily influenced by Hinduism in the past and I've also lived in Japan for 5 years, but seriously ...

WHO BUYS THIS FRIGGIN BULLSHIT?

Oh my god. I can't. I just. can't.

WELL AT LEAST THEY DIDN'T DECIDE TO CAST A KOREAN TO PLAY A JAPANESE CHARACTER WHO ACTUALLY SPEAKS JAPANESE THIS TIME.

JUST DO NOT EVEN THINK OF INCLUDING A DIFFERENT CULTURE IF YOU DON'T KNOW JACK SHIT ABOUT THAT CULTURE, IT'LL ONLY MAKE YOU LOOK STUPID.

The ironic thing is? I was writing this entry while cursing and watching the third episode since I have no other tv shows that I'm currently following.
